During the war in 1944, three Italian prisoners of war arrive

in an isolated community in the Black Isle to help with the farming.

Ignored by the locals, worried about families at home, and miserable

in the Scottish climate, they are finally befriended by a cowman's wife.

The film explores what happens to a community when people of a

different culture are forced to live and work among them.

Michael Radford's 1996 Oscar nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay for Il Postino

later established him as one of the most important British film directors of his generation.

hallam foe

“Jamie Bell is terrific”

a smart coming-of-age tale from David Mackenzie (the director of Young Adam).

Jamie Bell plays the hero, so cut up by his mother's suicide he runs off to Edinburgh to find a girl just like her.

Mackenzie takes pains to keep him this side of likeable, as he weaves an intriguing web of mystery, romance and farce.

Backed by Giles Nuttgens' atmospheric widescreen visuals, kooky animated titles and a too-cool-for-school indie soundtrack,

Hallam Foe is an impressive return to form for Mackenzie.

Bell is terrific in a role that finally allows him to lay Billy Elliot to rest.
